The legacy Coronary Care Unit has evolved from predominantly patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) to the contemporary Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) which includes a more heterogeneous group of patients with diverse cardiac and noncardiac critical illnesses. At the same time, the number and complexity of available therapies have increased across the spectrum of CICU illnesses along with the prevalence of critical noncardiac diagnoses, further augmenting the diversity and complexity of the contemporary CICU.

The increasing complexity of care seen within the modern CICU has created an increasing need for critical care providers with expertise in cardiology in the health care environment. The ACC Critical Care Cardiology Member Section provides a platform for critical care cardiology engagement; a central forum in which to discuss the unique overlap of cardiovascular medicine and critical care medicine.

Through collaborative efforts, this Section will help to develop and enhance training programs for critical care cardiologists, as well as create educational resources to support continuing education and the dissemination of novel scientific developments to all practitioners within the field. Our aim is to serve as the primary home for the growing number of medical professionals interested in CICU level care, as well as all aspects of acute cardiac care.

Additionally, the Section will be an impactful resource to and provide mentorship for fellows in training and early career cardiologists interested in careers in critical care cardiology or whose area of clinical or academic interest includes the care of patients treated within the CICU.

I hope that you will join us as we build this new forum for specialty dialogue, educational innovation, scientific development and dissemination as well as multi-societal collaboration.

Thank you!
